Ecuador challenge of a lifetime

Two brave Diabetes UK supporters will spend nine days trekking the volcanic mountains of Ecuador, in South America, to raise money for the charity.

Both 63-year-old Surjeet Soin from Luton and Norwich's Ray Marett, 30, pictured here, are experienced trekkers.

But they say that this South American adventure - to the top of the biggest active volcano in the world - will be their greatest challenge yet.

Surjeet, who has had Type 2 diabetes for 12 years and is Chairman of Diabetes UK’s Luton Voluntary Group, and Ray, whose

five-year-old nephew has Type 1 diabetes, leave for Ecuador on 5 September with 20 fearless others. The climate will see temperatures soar in the day and plummet at night.

“We can’t wait to tackle Ecuador,” they said.

"It’s going to be incredibly difficult – we are even planning to do a midnight glacier walk - but we will give it our all."

"We will be walking for around seven hours each day and camping in freezing conditions at night. But it’s all for a great cause – Diabetes UK does some brilliant work and we want to support the charity as much as possible.”
